AllTogetherChanin: (BH&G 9/2009) Peonies: Move peonies whenever necessary but it might take 2-3 yrs to bloom again. The best time to divide or move an existing one and plant a new one is September. Best to divide established peony before replanting than transplant it entirely. Dig up & wash off dirt so can identify the red eyes/buds, use sharp knife to cut the crown into sections that include 3-5 eyes attached to fat, healthy roots. Choose planting site with full sun & well-drained soil. Prepare planting hole deeply with compost & small amount of fertilizer. Replant so that eyes are no more than 2 in. below the soil surface. Water well after planting but avoid too frequently as they don't like soggy soil. Fernleaf Peonies 'Plena' are shorter than most peonies & so are good for the front of the border or in sunny rock gardens & have fernlike leaves.
